An Internship is a strategic way of kick-starting a career journey. Young graduates are usually excited about this opportunity, as they will have a chance to experience the real job market atmosphere. While developing their strategic structure, organizations today see it essential to include intern positions. As interns gain expertise, they play a significant role in helping out finish non-core tasks. The interns’ duties may not be strategic and complicated because supervisors would not want to scare them off at their careers’ grassroots. Mistakes they make are usually acceptable as they are just one of the best ways of learning new things.
There are uncountable benefits of being an intern, however, a few things make internship life difficult. To start with, people will always see you as a junior member of the organization whose opinion and feedback do not matter. No matter what you say, no matter how on the point you may be, whatever you propose will never be considered. This is always so heartbreaking that is why most interns will prefer staying silent. An important point to note is that not all organizations treat their trainees in such a manner.
Too much work is another challenge of being a trainee in an organization. People will feel like you are young and energetic; too much work will be allocated to you. Delivering it all with minimal mistakes and zero complaints is your chief duty. Much of this work is always clerical, like scanning documents, photocopying, and printing. At the end of it all, you end up tired with little gains for the day. While it might be frustrating, you should understand that your patience is being put on trial. Losing yourself and giving negative responses at this moment will only give a gloomy picture to your employer.
Being an intern is also tricky in that the amount of money paid is way lower than what the regular employees are paid. The tasks you are given are equal or even more than what the staff does, yet the pay you are given is so insignificant—at such a point, losing hope may be an option in mind because you have bills to pay and transport to cater for. It may not be easy to survive, but giving up should not be an option as that is how great people start their career life. The peanut salary will only be for a short period until the company gives you an employment contract.
People also find it challenging to be an intern because the company will not involve you in significant decisions. Interns are usually left behind in moments when the organization and its stakeholders need to make major decisions. It is not fair because an intern at that moment is part of the team who can point out a few critical things. Frustration sets in when decisions are made about the welfare of interns, and yet they were not involved. Institutions should reconsider this; trainees should be given a chance to give opinions especially on matters that affect them.
When things go wrong at the work place, the intern is always the first person to be blamed. It is believed that other staff are well-trained professionals who cannot do mistakes, but this is usually a wrong thought. Some senior members of staff might make mistakes and put the blame on the weaker link, the intern.
Since most of the graduate trainees are fresh from college and probably young, they are usually handsome/beautiful. This state makes them vulnerable to sexual abuse by other senior members of the organization. Being attractive is the best feeling ever, but being an attractive intern may be troublesome at the work place. You will end up being the source of attention especially the females. If not careful, some cunning members of staff will end up bribing you into having an affair with them. Work place affairs always end up bad as either party might lose their job.
Generally, being on internship is good as you will advance your career to another great level after a certain period. While this is good, the challenges that it comes with may be a setback that will make you think of quitting. You should not quit but face the problems head-on and overcome them.
